Susanna Reid labels Kate Garraway 'inspirational' after her Covid horror

Susanna Reid has told of her admiration for her Good Morning Britain co-star Kate Garraway after her tough year supporting her husband Derek Draper, who is still in hospital after a long battle against coronavirus.

Kate’s husband Derek, 53, was rushed to hospital with coronavirus back in March.

Despite now being free from the virus, he remains fighting for his life in hospital.

Kate returned to the ITV show back in July, four months after her husband was taken to hospital for coronavirus.

Now Susanna has told how the brave host, who also returned to her presenting duties on Smooth Radio this week, is an inspiration to her colleagues for “putting on a brave face and carrying on” amid her personal anguish.

Susanna told The Telegraph’s Stella magazine: “It has been a nightmare that has knocked all of us for six, but Kate is living through it every day.

“To watch her put on a brave face and carry on has been an utter inspiration for all of us who work on the show, and I also know she’s an inspiration to everyone who watches it.

“I don’t want to speak on her behalf, but we are a very tight team and this has been the foremost of our thoughts.”

She continued: “But it was exactly because of all the fear and anxiety that it became so important for us to cover stories of hope and inspiration.

“Like Captain Tom walking around his garden and lovely Sister Anthea Allen at my local hospital, St George’s in Tooting, who had all these local people making food and cakes for the nurses.”

Kate and Derek recently celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary, but Kate was unable to spend time with him on their milestone.

Speaking on their anniversary, she said: “I won’t be able to see him today. I kind of hoped he would but it hasn’t worked out that way for the visits. But maybe it would be a bit strange anyway.”

This week Kate called for people to stick to the new coronavirus rules

On Good Morning Britain, Kate discussed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s warning that members of the public need to stick to coronavirus rules in order for Christmas to be “saved”.

Kate backed the PM’s call, saying “that’s the idea” as she urged viewers to stick to the rules.

She said: “Yep, Boris Johnson has said on the front page of The Sun, ‘Stick to the rules so we can save Christmas’.

“That’s the general idea behind it.”

The 53-year-old returned to the ITV show back in July, four months after her husband was taken to hospital after contracting the coronavirus.
