Suranne’s former Coronation Street co-star Katherine Kelly, 39, stars as Elizabeth Sutherland, the sister of Anne’s intended wife Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle), in the show.

The actress and Katherine are both breakout stars from the ITV1 soap, and while they didn’t star together their characters Karen and Becky are linked by their relationship with Steve McDonald.

Suranne’s character Becky dated Steve from 2001, and they got married in February 2004 despite a rocky road up the aisle before they officially divorced in 2006, even though Suranne already left the show during its 2004 Boxing Day episode.

On joining the cast of Gentleman Jack, Katherine gushed: ‘I’m thrilled to be reuniting with Sally [Wainwright, the show’s writer] once again.

‘I know how passionate she is about the life and times of Anne Lister, and I’m delighted to be portraying such a key historical character in Anne Lister’s story.
