HIGH street stores are flogging vegan versions of their meaty favourites that contain more than DOUBLE the amount of salt.
M&S’s Plant Kitchen no-chicken kievs have 2.4g of salt — almost half the recommended 6g daily allowance — while its own-brand chicken kievs work out at 1.05g each.
Nutrition and fitness expert Sheree Cox said: “You have to be aware of the salt content in vegan products, which are often perceived to be healthier.
“Some vegan products contain a lot more salt than meat alternatives, which will be a surprise to many.
“Shoppers need to check they are not eating more than the 6g daily recommended salt allowance for an adult.”
It comes as more than seven million people said they would go vegan for Veganuary this month. Also at M&S, the Plant Kitchen no-beef burger with 1.18g of salt per 100g has double the salt content of M&S organic British beef burgers with 0.58g salt per 100g.
Waitrose’s Vivera plant garlic kiev, £2.25, has 1.5g of salt per 100g but the store’s own-brand £3.75 chicken kievs with garlic and parsley butter have less than a quarter of the salt content — only 0.34g per 100g.
