Sunglasses trends 2019: We test the hottest shapes of the summer

A killer pair of sunglasses is an essential part of every fashion fan’s accessory toolkit.

Last year was all about teeny-tiny frames and retro cat-eyes, but 2019 will see dramatic eyewear of all shapes and sizes take centre stage.

From dramatic oversized shapes at Gucci to 80s-tastic sporty specs, we tried and tested silhouettes you should think about adding to your collection this season.

1. Cycling Sunnies

Each x Other, Stella McCartney and Vetements (IMaxTree)

It’s easier to count the catwalks cycling glasses weren’t featured on during the spring/summer 2019 shows.

Stella McCartney paired her ready-to-wear looks with the wraparound specs, Each X Other showcased rainbow mirrored designs by Poppy Lissiman, and Vetements added studs for a rock and roll finish. The sporty sunnies were also seen at Nicopanda, Philip Lim, Alexander Wang , Zadig and Voltaire, Kenzo and MSMG.

2. Triangles

Saint Laurent, Marni and Burberry (IMaxTree/ PA)

Round frames are out, triangles are in.

Saint Laurent sent disco-inspired upside-down triangles down the runway, Marni plumped for wearable tortoise shell designs and Burberry’s sci-fi frames were tinted.  We love the far more affordable option below from Topshop.

3. Oversized D-Frames

Gucci, Miu Miu and Elie Saab (Getty/IMaxTree)

Miu Miu, Elie Saab and Rick Owens are just a few of the designers responsible for exaggerating the popular D-frame in order to create a new level of oversized.

Gucci, of course, managed to trump them all by creating part-spectacles, part-mask. Divas, do you dare to wear?

4. Bold Rectangle Frames

Off-White, Moschino and Annakiki (IMaxTree)

Bold rectangles were favoured at trendsetting Off-White with neon lime frames, there was statement paint stroke detail at Moschino and block colours at Annakiki. Expect to see these unmissable shades on your Instagram feed soon.
