Stunning Greek island wants to pay people £450 a month to live there – and they will even give you a plot of land for a home

AN island in Greece wants to pay people €500 (£450) per month to live there.

Not only that, but they will also give the new locals a plot of land to build their home or business.

The island of Antikythera is looking for new locals as the remote isle is home to just 24 people – which increases to 40 people during the summer.

Located between Crete and Kythira, it is 45 minutes by plane from Athens.

The scheme is sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Church, who will pay the stipend for three years.

They are ideally looking for young families to join the community as the population has slowly dropped from over 300 people at the beginning of the 20th century.

Young locals have been leaving to head to the busier Greek islands for work, resulting in an ageing population.

However, there are lots of jobs such as fishermen, builders and bakers for islanders, according to Greek website iefimerida.Mayor of the island Andreas Harhalakis told the website: “We are looking for many families to ‘revive’ our island.”

The island is very rustic – there is no bank or ATM on the island and there are very few shops.

Antikythera has just one small provisions shop, with basic food and vegetables, which are grown on the island, along with wine.

However, it does have electricity and internet connection.

Want to invite some guests? There is currently just one Airbnb home on the island, with a hostel and a couple of other areas that can accommodate visitors.

While Greek families are offered priority, the opportunity is also open to other nationalities.

According to local reports, four families have already been approved.

Last year, a dream job to live on the Greek island of Syros while being paid to look after cats saw thousands of people apply.

Jeffyne Telson, who got the job, spoke to Sun Online Travel about what it was like, saying it was “an honour”.
