Shirley Ballas joined the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel back in 2017, taking over from Len Goodman.

And the 59-year-old revealed that she ‘stopped eating’ after signing up, because she felt so insecure next to Darcey Bussell.

Things came to a head when the professional dancer noticed how ‘gaunt’ she looked, and vowed to change.

‘My whole life I’ve never felt, as a female, I was up to scratch,’ she said.

‘When I first went on Strictly I had a little phase at the beginning, you know, when I was sat next to this really beautiful lady, Darcey Bussell — this ballerina, this Snow White beauty — that I stopped eating until I looked at myself and realised I looked so gaunt.’

Speaking about how she deals with trolls and bullying, she continued to the MailOnline: ‘Over the years there have been things said you wouldn’t say to a dog, let alone a person. But I just keep moving on, keep trundling on, keep swimming upstream.’

Shirley previously underwent breast enlargement surgery back in 2002, in a bid to save her marriage to ex-husband Corky Ballas.

She had her breast size increased from a 32B to a 34DD when she realised he had been unfaithful, as she felt she needed to make herself ‘more attractive’.

‘He said the affairs were just about sex,’ she added to the publication. ‘“It’s nothing to do with you. I love you,” he told me. But I never got a grip around that. That’s when I got these [implants].

‘I thought I’d have this fantastic bust and everyone would look at me and think I was amazing.

However, the dancer became more appreciative of her more natural, smaller bust since she started dating actor Danny Taylor, and became ‘at peace’ with herself.

Shirley is set to get the implants removed at the end of the month, after a doctor revealed it may not be possible to check for cancer behind them.

And she has no plans to get new implants put it.

‘There are rumours that scar tissues cause chronic fatigue which I have suffered with even over the last year,’ she previously said to The Sun.

‘But if they take out the scar tissue it would involve bigger surgery and perhaps a reconstruction. But I don’t want any implants in. I don’t want any foreign bodies in my body.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Sunday, at 7.15pm, on BBC.
