Strictly Come Dancing’s Joe Sugg sustains painful back injury during rehearsals for Christmas special

Strictly Come Dancing’s Joe Sugg has suffered a painful injury in training for the upcoming Christmas Day special.

The 28-year-old star, who appeared in the BBC series last year and has since started a relationship with partner Dianne Buswell, told his YouTube subscribers that he’d sustained a ‘twinge’ to his back after attempting a jump.

Speaking in a video uploaded to his channel, Joe revealed: ‘We were rehearsing our number for the Christmas special and I jumped off something and twinged my back. I’ve pulled muscles in the past, but I’ve never pulled a muscle like this in my life.’

He added: ‘With this one, it managed to pull around my back but also came around my chest, so I’m finding it hard to get my breath. It was like I was winded.

‘The physio told me I need to put heat on it so I’m using Dianne’s sloth that smells of corn and you put it in the microwave.’

Ouch.

Joe is set to face Debbie McGee, Gemma Atkinson, Chizzy Akudolu, Mark Wright and Richard Arnold in the hotly-anticipated special, due to air on Christmas Day.

Debbie believes that Gemma and Joe might have the edge on the competition for this year’s one-off though and speaking ahead of the show, she said: ‘It’s not totally about dancing it’s about who the people like.

‘Joe [Sugg] and Dianne [Buswell] have this huge following on social and so has Gemma [Atkinson]. People will like that they’re dancing with real-life partners – it adds another dimension.’

Despite the fierce competition, Joe can’t wait to get back to the infamous stage.

‘I’m really excited to have a go on the Strictly ballroom floor again this Christmas,’ he enthused. ‘Strictly feels like a home away from home for me so I will be giving it my best shot and ending the year on a high.’

Strictly Come Dancing finale airs on Saturdayat 7.05pm on BBC One with the special airing on Christmas Day at 4.40pm.
