Strictly Come Dancing’s Emma Barton hopes her West End work will help her in the competition

Emma Barton has said she hopes her previous stint in Chicago will “help” her in Strictly Come Dancing.

The EastEnders actress, 42, starred in the West End production as Roxie Hart for 12 weeks in 2010, before also playing the part on the UK tour.

Speaking to Standard Online and other reporters ahead of the Strictly launch, she said: “Chicago was ten years ago and I haven’t done anything since, [aside from] being in telly and plays.

“I’ve got musicality, I’ve got a good ear for music. I’m hoping that will help me.”

However, she added the dance styles on Strictly are “so different” from those she learnt for Chicago.

“I’ve never done any of these styles, so I’m going to be working and learning. I’m hoping the musicality will give me an advantage.”

When Barton was confirmed for this year’s series, a previous interview with the Birmingham Mail resurfaced.

In the chat, she had said it “would not be fair” to do the dance competition after starring in a West End play.

Discussing why she has now decided to take the opportunity now, Barton said: “I knew that I had to say yes to this because I just love watching it.

“But if I hadn’t said yes I would have really regretted it.

“It is just the biggest show on TV in autumn and you’re learning such a wonderful skill by the best people in the business.”

The Strictly Come Dancing launch show airs on BBC1 on Saturday 7 September, at 7.10pm
