Stranger Things season 4: Is Joyce Byers set to uncover hidden powers from Upside Down?

Stranger Things fans are eagerly awaiting the green light for season four after season three brought back the terrifying Mind Flayer, killing off Hopper (played by David Harbour) and Billy (Dacre Montgomery) in a shocking turn of events.

However, despite surviving The Battle of Starcourt, The  Byers family hasn’t had it easy as Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is clearly still traumatised by the monsters that plagued him in previous outings of the Netflix show.

Season one saw Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) in turmoil as Will disappeared into the Upside Down with no word of him being dead or alive, and the Byers always seem to be the first to know when the evil forces are coming back.

However, one fan speculates the reason the Byers’ can’t seem to escape is because they are connected to the Upside Down through a hidden power passed on by Joyce, as they are the only ones that seem to be able to communicate between the Upside down and the real world besides Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Danielle Dyer).

Taking to Reddit, user Waterhorse816 theorised: “In Season One, we see five people communicate between the Upside down and the real world in some way. Eleven, Joyce, Will, Jonathan, and Nancy.

“…In Episode one, the Demogorgen tracks and attacks Will. It is explained later that the Demogorgen can smell blood and follow it, like a shark. However, Will is not bleeding in this scene.

“You might argue he scraped his knee or sustained a small injury when he fell off his bike, but remember, he fell BECAUSE he saw the Demogorgen. It found him first.”

Moreover, the fan recalled a similar incident with Joyce where once again, she is tracked without bleeding.

The user added: “The Demogorgen knows she is there and crawls out of the wall to attack her. These are the only two characters in the entire series the Demogorgen can sense without blood to guide it.”

Moreover, it seems the Byers’ created a gate into the upside down whilst trying to break down a barrier which could explain why Nancy can communicate to the outside.

The user continued: “In Episode 4, after the shenanigans with the Christmas lights, a window manifests itself into the Upside Down.

“We never see anything like this again, and coincidentally (or not) the window appears when two members of the Byers family are trying really hard to break down a barrier, in the process seeming to almost create a gate.”

Moreover, the fan pointed out the only time Nancy can communicate through the upside down is by the gate created by the Byers’.

The fan added: “While they run around trying to find each other, Jonathan tells her multiple times to follow his voice.

“When she does, she circles back to the gate and hears his voice coming from it, implying that is where the noise is coming from.

“Therefore, she is not really hearing Jonathan’s voice across the barrier, but through a hole in it.

The fan also predicted Joyce has special powers in her blood that help her survive in the Upside Down.

The user said: “My current theory is that Joyce herself has a weak form of Truesight, which she passed onto her sons.”

Could Joyce’s powers be what saved Will so many times?

Stranger Things series 3 is now available to stream on Netflix.
