Stranger Things season 3: New cast member opens up on role – 'I've won the lottery'

Stranger Things season three can’t come soon enough for Netflix subscribers following the global success of the first two series. Millie Bobby Brown is back as Eleven, as is Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, and they’ll be joined by some new faces in the Stranger Things cast. One new face to debut on Stranger Things in season three is Jake Busey, who’ll take on the role of Bruce and he’s exclusively revealed how landing the role was like “winning the lottery”.

Stranger Things fans will catch a first glimpse at Bruce (played by Jake Busey) in season three.

Busey’s no stranger to hit US TV series and movies with a CV that boasts roles in The Predator and Starship Troopers.

Ahead of the Netflix series’ return, Busey opened up about what it was like to land the role of a lifetime.

Busey said: “Stranger Things was one of those moments in life that you really always hoped for but never got,

“And then suddenly you’re looking at the TV, you’re looking at the paper in your hand and you realise: ‘My god, I have the same numbers as those little white balls bouncing in the air tubes and I have won the lottery.’

“It’s a disbelief. You just can’t get your head around the reality of it. That’s where you start questioning your own existence.

“It becomes very existential at that moment because you’re like, ‘I never thought this is something I’d be worthy of and yet here I am,’”

WILL STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 BE THE FINAL SERIES?

The Stranger Things star continued: “And not only am I here, but the people making it have told me, they’ve been following my career for some time,

“You realise that you’re not in such a small microcosm of your own existence where you wake up every morning, take the kids to school and go to the gym, pick your kids up and then it’s homework and dinner then go to bed,

“You realise the world’s bigger than that and there’s people watching what you do.

“It just so happened they are making the biggest show in the world and I still can’t believe it.”

Busey’s disbelief at landing the role of Bruce was further explained by his own fandom of the series.

He revealed: “I was a big fan of the show (because) I’m the same age as the kids in the show.

STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3 EPISODE TITLES REVEALED

“So season one is 1983 and the kids were 12 – that was me! So when I first watched the show, it took me until season two to realise that it was a period piece,

“Because the world looked like that when I was 12 so I didn’t think anything of it,

“Then I hear all these people in their early 30s saying: ‘Oh it looks amazing it has all that stuff my parents had.’

“That’s kinda cool, I feel like this show is my generation’s Big Chill. I remember when the Big Chill came out in the Eighties and my parents and all their friends were so excited about that film and that it took them back to when they were young,

“It was kind of a cultural phenomenon at the time and I feel like Stranger Things is kinda like that for this generation.”

Busey also provided an exclusive insight as to who Bruce is and what fans can expect from the new character.

The actor said: “I can tell you that Bruce is a journalist and that he works for the Hawkins Post.

“He’s got questionable morals and a sick sense of humour and that’s what I’ve been cleared to discuss on that one until further notice.

“It was like slipping on a comfortable shoe and a very fine role to play.”

Stranger Things season 3 is available to stream from July 4.
