***Warning: Stranger Things 3 spoilers Ahead***

Stranger Things 3 star Maya Hawke has spoken out about the emotional coming out scene that connected Steve and Robin on a whole new level.

Maya, who plays Scoops Ahoy employee Robin, is dragged into the misadventures of co-worker Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin (Gaten Mattarazzo) in season three, thrusting her into the group in a major way super quickly.

However, despite the Mind Flayer, and the Russian soldiers, and the brutal death scenes that we’re still getting over, her biggest moment came when her character came out as gay.

Speaking about the moment, Maya explained the importance of how the scene played out.

‘It feels wonderful to have a piece of that humanity involved in this giant, action-packed drama,’ she told Hollywood Reporter.

‘It’s such an amazing thing the Duffer Brothers did, stopping the whole show – there’s an action scene going on – and it stops for a seven-minute conversation between two people who really care about each other.’

‘It’s really a beautiful thing. I feel really lucky I got to play that,’ she added.

In the scene, Robin and Steve are feeling the comedown of a truth serum drug that the Russians had injected them with during a violent interrogation.

Throwing up side-by-side in toilet stalls at the mall, the pair end up having a heart-to-heart, with Steve confessing that he had started developing feelings for Robin.

However, despite the pair’s banter being one of the highlights of the season, it simply wasn’t going to happen – with Robin coming out to him as gay in response.

Fearing he would never talk to her again, Robin decided to reveal her biggest secret – with hilariously sweet consequences.

As they sit battered and bruised next to each other, Robin started telling him that she was jealous of him in high school not because she fancied him, but because of the girls who would pay attention to him.

‘Tammy Thompson…I wanted her to look at me, but she couldn’t pull her eyes away from your or your stupid hair,’ she told him.

‘I didn’t understand because you would get bagel crumbs all over the floor and you asked dumb questions, and you were a douchebag.

‘You didn’t even like her and I would go home and just scream into my pillow.’

‘But…Tammy Thompson’s a girl…?’ Steve responded, before the penny finally dropped and he tenderly responded: ‘Oh.’

They then sang Total Eclipse of the Heart like Muppets together – which put Robin’s mind at ease that he was going to disown her.

While they may not be a romantic couple any time soon, they make one hell of a comedy duo – which is about to get even worse now they’ve both got a job in the video store.

We can’t wait to see what that means for season four.

Stranger Things 3 is available now on Netflix.
