Stranger Things 3: Everything You Need To Know

Is there a trailer for Stranger Things 3?

Netflix has finally dropped a trailer for Stranger Things 3, and every element of it is glorious – from Steve and Dustin reuniting with a secret handshake to The Who’s classic hit “Teenage Wasteland” playing in the background.

Previously, a couple of key teasers had also been released. At the end of 2018, the streaming giant shared a video listing out the episode titles: “Suzie, Do You Copy?”, “The Mall Rats”, “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard”, “The Sauna Test”, “The Source”, “The Birthday”, “The Bite”, and “The Battle of Starcourt”. Even better was the promo that took the form of an advertisement for the aforementioned Starcourt – “one of the finest shopping facilities in America” – which has just opened in Hawkins. The archetypal American mall is home to Claire’s, Jazzercize, and Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Parlour, where Steve (and his glorious, glorious hair) appear to have a summer job.

Who is in the cast of Stranger Things 3?

Every member of Stranger Things II’s core gang will return, including Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Will (Noah Schnapp), and Max (Sadie Sink). Among the older teenagers, quintessential girl-next-door Nancy (Natalia Dyer), eternally tortured Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), mildly deranged Billy (Dacre Montgomery), and paragon of humanity Steve (Joe Keery) are also due back – with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Jim (David Harbour) there to make attempts at parenting/get in the way of the kids’ schemes.

The Hawkins newcomers this year are particularly exciting. Maya Thurman Hawke has joined the cast as Robin, an “alternative girl who is equal parts sharp and playful”. As seen in the trailer, she works with Steve at Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Parlour, but “bored with her mundane day job”, she goes in search of a “little excitement” and “gets more than she bargained for when she uncovers a dark secret in Hawkins”, according to Netflix. Francesca Heale, meanwhile, will play Heather, a lifeguard at the community pool who (of course) gets swept up in the mysterious force threatening Hawkins. Jake Busey (Storm Troopers) and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) will also play sleazy 1980s politician Mayor Kline and Hawkins Post journalist Bruce, respectively.

Best of all? Queen of sass Erica – Lucas’s little sister played by Priah Ferguson – has been upgraded to a series regular, with Stranger Things 3 taking her on a “wild mission to save Hawkins from a dangerous and unexpected new threat” with her “army of friends”. Just imagine the shade she could throw at a Demogorgon.

What is the plot of Stranger Things 3?

So far, limited details have been revealed about the plot of the third season – but the Duffer brothers did give some heavily veiled clues about it in their behind-the-scenes companion to the first and second series, Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down. “While it’s our most fun season, it also turns out to be our grossest season,” Ross Duffer shared. “Aesthetically it’s going to feel very different. Everyone is going to this new mall, seeing movies, and, of course, the Hawkins pool is open for business. I think there’ll be a sense of fun and joy.” What is certain is that much of the plot will revolve around the gang’s transition into adulthood. As Finn says in the voiceover to the trailer: “We’re not kids anymore; I mean, what did you think, we were just going to sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?”

When will Stranger Things 3 be released?

The blockbuster series will return on July 4 – Independence Day in America. Netflix announced the news on December 31 with a vintage teaser that featured clips of Dick Clarke’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Notably, last season was released on Halloween, with the action beginning on October 31, and the third instalment will take place over the course of the summer of 1985.
