Stormzy has announced that his new album will be released later this year.
The Grime superstar broke the news during the first night of his delayed Heavy Is The Head UK tour in Cardiff on Sunday night.
The 28-year-old said in a video aired during his set at the Motorpoint Arena, that gave an insight into the recording process of the forthcoming record: ‘This is the album of my dreams. This album is deeper than man could ever imagine. I’m free.’
The clip, which showed the Croydon-born star in the studio, concluded by confirming the album will arrive this year and is available for pre-order now.
A press release alater stated that the rapper is offering the pre-order at his concerts as a ‘personal gesture of gratitude to his loyal and supportive fans who have waited almost two years for the UK shows.’
Fans at the gigs can pre-order the CD format of the record via official merch stands at the venues. Those who do so will receive a QR coded lanyard and the option to buy a limited edition t-shirt.
The new album will be a follow-up to 2019’s acclaimed number one record Heavy Is The Head.
His 2017 debut album, Gang Signs And Prayer, was the first grime album to reach number one in the UK and was named album of the year at the 2018 Brit Awards.
The curremt tour, which is Stormzy’s biggest to date, includes three nights at London’s O2 Arena and shows in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow.
It was repeatedly delayed by the pandemic, along with those of Sir Elton John, Genesis and The Rolling Stones.
Stormzy rose to prominence with his YouTube freestyle Shut Up. Since then it’s been a meterioc rise, which in December 2020 saw him sign with top US hip hop label Def Jam after leaving Atlantic Records, joining some of the biggest names in rap music, including Kanye West.
However, the star said his proudest moment was launching his Merky Books publishing imprint, which gives opportunities to writers who have been overlooked by the ‘literary mainstream’.
His current tour continues in Newcastle tomorrow night (March 15) with shows following in Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and other cities throughout the month and into April.
