Stop damp from soaking up your cash with these top tips for beating it

IF there’s one thing guaranteed to dampen the mood around your house it’s mould on the walls.

The nasty fungus will spread like wildfire, leaving unsightly and hazardous stains that are dangerous to breathe in — and cost a fortune to put right.

You’ll pay between £50 and £250 to remove mould from a single room, or up to £1,000 to clean mould from an entire house.*

Here are my tips to beat it.

KEEP A LID ON IT: In winter, reduce the amount of water in the air by cooking with lids on pans, hanging clothes outside if it’s warm enough and ensuring tumble dryers are vented to the outside. Remember to use your extractor fan when cooking, bathing or showering.

VENT YOUR FEELINGS: Keep windows open as much as possible. If it’s too cold, open any vents. Windows are particularly vulnerable to mould due to condensation.

CLEAR THE AIR: A helpful tip from structuralrepairs.com is to make sure air can circulate by leaving gaps between furniture and the walls. Keeping your home spick and span by cleaning, dusting and hoovering will also help get rid of the spores that produce fungus.

TRY A TRAP: UniBond’s Aero 360º moisture absorbers constantly gather tubs of water on my windowsills. The Range is selling them for just £7.99 and refills are £9.99 for four at Robert Dyas, down from £12.99. If you need more, get an electric dehumidifier like Lidl’s Silvercrest one for £79.99.

FIGHT WITH LIGHT: Mould and mildew thrive in the dark, so keep the curtains open during the day.

DON’T WAIT TO INSULATE: Try to avoid cold spots – if there’s a gap between your wall insulation and your loft insulation, for example, try to get this fixed as it will attract condensation and possibly mould.
