Steven Gerrard returning to Liverpool as manager 'inevitable'

Steven Gerrard making a return to Liverpool as manager is “inevitable”, according to his former teammate Jamie Redknapp.

The Rangers boss has got his management career off to a good start, leading his side to back-to-back second-place finishes in his two seasons in charge.

His move into coaching has unsurprisingly brought with it persistent rumours that he could one day step into the dugout at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously stated he hopes Gerrard does replace him when he eventually steps aside, and Redknapp feels it is a matter of time.

“Stevie is in Scotland and doing well,” Redknapp said on The Lockdown Tactics podcast . “Yes, it’s not easy because Celtic are so strong. But Stevie has got it [as a manager], you can see that.

“I think after a few years at Rangers, and as long as he doesn’t make too many mistakes, it’s only a question of time before he manages Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp decides to go.”

Gerrard started his coaching journey in Liverpool’s academy after hanging up his boots following a brief stint at LA Galaxy at the end of his career.

He has admitted previously it would be his “dream” to manage Liverpool, but is fully aware there is still some way for him to go before he can be considered a worthy successor to Klopp.

“I understand why [people expect him to succeed Klopp] because I was captain for so long and a large chunk of the fanbase would like me back at the club,” Gerrard said in February.

“But I’m bright enough to realise that, first and foremost, you have to be good enough. The owners need to think you’re the right man.

“Am I ready for the Liverpool job right now? Maybe not.”

He looks to have sometime to wait anyway, as Klopp is under contract with Liverpool until 2024.

Whether he remains at Rangers till that time remains to be seen, but his recent grumbles regarding football in Scotland suggest he may ready to move on before then.

Seeing his former England teammate Frank Lampard managing Chelsea in the Premier League will no doubt be on his mind, particularly given they started their management careers at the same time.

But Redknapp feels regardless of the pairs’ success, they deserve credit for putting their heads above the parapet.

“I wasn’t sure if Stevie would go into management,” added Redknapp. “It’s a bit like Frank.

“They’ve both had great careers [as players], won everything, and I could see them just doing punditry, taking the easy option. But they haven’t, they’ve gone in at the sharp end.”
