Steven Bergwijn close to £30m Tottenham transfer after Jose Mourinho meeting

Tottenham are closing in on PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch international Steven Bergwijn.

The 22-year-old has been left out of PSV’s squad for this evening’s game against FC Twente after Spurs lodged a bid believed to be in the region of £30million.

Sources in Holland expect the deal to be done in the next 48 hours.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and chairman Daniel Levy met with Bergwijn’s advisers last week.

Bergwijn, who is also being monitored by Leicester, has a clause in his contract that means he can leave for £30million in the summer.

He was on the brink of joining Sevilla last year, but the deal collapsed when the Spanish club failed to trigger the buy-out.

Now he looks destined for the Premier League.

Mourinho likes Bergwijn’s versatility. The 22-year-old can play across the front three and has scored six goals this season.

Bergwijn began his career with Ajax but moved from Amsterdam to Eindhoven when PSV offered him an escape route following a bust-up with a youth coach.

PSV are braced for a backlash from fans who regard the winger as their club’s best player.

Bergwijn, who has been capped seven times for his country by Ronald Koeman, has won three Eredivisie titles with PSV.
