Steve Bruce says he has met Newcastle’s new owners but is yet to discuss his future and will do his utmost to stay in the job.

Newcastle have confirmed Bruce will be in charge for his 1000th game as a manager when they host Tottenham on Sunday.

Following the £300m Saudi-backed takeover finally going through earlier this month, many expected Bruce to be given the boot with the team second bottom in the table and yet to win a match.

But the 60-year-old is not going down without a fight despite not knowing where he stands in the plans of the club’s new owners.

‘I’ll have a crack and try my utmost, who wouldn’t want this opportunity?’ he said.

‘Any manager would love to sit in my chair, so I will make a fist of it and try my utmost. I will try my best for the club.

‘There were no discussions on my future, it was all about the team, injuries and how we are looking for the weekend.

‘It was very informal and I have to say they were very good people. It was good to see them.

‘Let’s not forget it is a great thing that has happened for the club and the city. If it takes this great club forward, then great.’

New part-owner Amanda Staveley has remain tight-lipped on Bruce’s future so far but says their approach would be ‘patient and considered’ and that ‘change doesn’t happen overnight.’

In the mean-time Bruce will be hoping his side can deliver a performance deserving of the current euphoric mood around Newcastle following Mike Ashley’s departure after 14 years.

The former Aston Villa boss could still be subjected to fans calling for his sacking on Sunday but he’s asking supporters to focus on getting behind the team.

‘Its not about me, the 1000th game, I played 950 times, won everything there is to win domestically so it’s not about me,’ he added.

‘It is about the club going forward and more importantly getting a result on Sunday. We need a win to get us moving up the table.

‘I know it will be ridiculous atmosphere which we will all looking forward to.

‘Whatever they think of me the most important thing is to see team win and I don’t think it will be an atmosphere like we’ve seen before.

‘The team trained well this week and I hope we can win this match.’
