Stephen Merchant had The Last Leg presenters and viewers in stitches with his reference to Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis on the show.

The comedian was brought on (virtually of course) as a special guest, and it didn’t take him long to start ripping into the lads.

Speaking to presenter Alex Brooker, he pointed out how he’d been mocking Boris Johnson’s chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, declaring him ‘like a one-footed Emily Maitlis.’

Elsewhere on the show, Adam Hills gave the Newsnight host a shout-out as he joked he didn’t want to say too much about Mr Cummings, ‘mainly because I don’t want to have to take a night off next week,’ before giving her a full-on shout-out in solidarity.

Fans were loving the mentions of the star, with one writing: ‘Nice shout out for @maitlis on #TheLastLeg,’ while another said: ‘“Like a one footed Emily Maitlis” oh my god I LOVE Stephen Merchant.’

One more said: ‘LOVE the @maitlis reference in #TheLastLeg. Well executed @adamhillscomedy.’

Maitlis has been ‘overwhelmed’ by support after it was ruled an episode of Newsnight she hosted ‘did not meet’ the BBC’s impartiality standards following a monologue on Mr Cummings.

Even though she had the backing of the masses and celebrities spoke out to support her comments, many others felt it wasn’t in line with the Beeb’s reporting guidelines.

It was later announced journalist Razzall would be taking the desk, which prompted anger from many who felt Maitlis had done nothing wrong – although Razzall clarified that the broadcaster had not prevented Emily from hosting the show that night.

Emily said of the support from fans and friends: ‘Been overwhelmed by all the kindness, messages – and support on here – and I’ve probably missed much of it. ‘

A big thank you from us all at #newsnight.’

The Last Leg Down Under returns Friday at 10pm on Channel 4.
