Steph McGovern: ‘Why are people doing this?’ BBC Breakfast presenter rages at 'idiots'


Steph McGovern, 37, who is pregnant with her first child with her girlfriend, responded to a tweet online made by Cleveland Police which revealed how many hoax calls they have had during the six-week school break.

The police department, which covers Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton and Middlesbrough, said they have received more than 100 hoax calls this summer.

They shared a video which included voices of children ringing the emergency number making false claims.

One person asked for a pepperoni pizza while other clips included someone singing and other children’s voices just laughing.

They captioned the video: “999 operators have received over one hundred hoax emergency calls since the start of the school holidays from telephone kiosks in #Middlesbrough, #Redcar and #Cleveland, #Stockton and #Hartlepool. Read more here: http://bit.ly/2zzEQkB.”

Steph retweeted the post to her 367,000 followers and called the people who make the prank calls “idiots”.

The BBC reporter wrote: “Seriously… why are people doing this? It’s not funny!! #doyles (Boro slang for ‘idiots’).”

One person replied: ”Nothing new Steph, this used to happen when I was a lad at school a looooooooooooong time ago, still doesn’t make it right though.”

Steph said back: “I know it’s nothing new, you’d just think 20 years later things would have changed!”

Meanwhile, Steph has ben busy on BBC Breakfast this week, drawing attention to the WorldSkills Kazan 2019.

The awards, which was held in Russia, saw more than a thousand professionals from 63 counties compete to for a chance to win a media in their chosen skill.

Steph appeared on the sofa to report on the huge event, dubbed the “Skills Olympics”, alongside Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt.

Following her appearance on the show, the star was met with a Twitter user criticising her pronunciation.

Steph, from Middlesbrough, wrote in via of her followers: “Loved talking about our Team UK success at World Skills in Russia this morning on @BBCBreakfast— young people we need to be incredibly proud of.

“The best in the world for their trades.”

One viewer went on to question her pronunciation of a certain word and said she sounded like a “southerner” when saying the word “plasterer”.

They wrote: “Liked the feature, good to see young folk doing so well, why have you started to pronounce plasterer like a southerner?”

However, she stated it is actually the way she has pronounced the word all of her life.

Steph replied: “It’s a Middlesbrough accent quirk. I say head-mar-ster too. I have said it like that all my life. Weird isn’t it?”
