Steph McGovern stunned as co-stars mock Channel 4 move: ‘Jealousy will get you nowhere'

Steph McGovern guest presented BBC One show Have I Got News You For You yesterday, which comes days after she announced she has signed up to host a new morning programme on Channel 4.

On the evening show, which features teams captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop, the BBC Breakfast star produced a game for the two sides.

She said: “Frustrated pro Brexiteers have been throwing around some rude names this week, so I’ve got a game for you.”

The pregnant star added: “C**k, dork, or Buffoon?”

Steph then showed them a spinning wheel which featured John Bercow, Dominic Greaves, and Oliver Letwin’s faces.

“You’ve got to guess out of those three names which ones they were called by an unnamed Tory source,” she said.

The audience laughed at the game with Paul mocking: “No wonder you’re leaving the BBC, if this is what it’s sunk to.”

“Yeah it’s very Channel 4,” Ian added, leaving Steph open-mouthed, before she was seen laughing.

Referencing the kind of shows which air on the network, Ian joked: “That will be on after 10 o’clock after my unpleasant diseases.”

Paul chimed in: “We’re going to swap armpits for a fortnight.”

After the laughter in the studio calmed down, Steph said to them: “Listen lads, jealousy will get you nowhere.”

Steph has been a part of BBC Breakfast for eight years, but after going on maternity leave recently, she won’t be returning and will instead be fronting The Steph Show every weekday from 6am until 9.15am on Channel 4.

The expectant mum shared a message on Twitter earlier in the week where she thanked everyone for their “kind messages” regarding her news.

She began: “Eeee well what a couple of days! Thank you so much for all the kind messages.

“It’s been a bit overwhelming and given I’m due to give birth any day now, I thought I better take a day or two before I tweet.”

The Watchdog presenter thanked crew members for their support and said her “wonderful team” had been like “an extended family” to her during her time on the show.

Praising the tech gang, the production staff and make-up artists, Steph added: “I love them. They have looked after me through thick and thin, and made me sound and look better than I really am.”

The star then addressed her co-presenters, who include the likes of Dan Walker, Louise Minchin, Ben Thompson and John Kay, and joked they are “show-offs”.

She wrote: “The most supportive of group of show-offs you’ll ever meet. Whatever is happening in each of our lives, we’ve covered for each other, fought for each other and of course regularly taken the mick out of each other too.”(sic)

The host added: “Time to hang up my Breakfast hard hat and hi-vis. And say, thank YOU.”
