Yesterday, it was revealed Steph McGovern, 37, is stepping down from BBC Breakfast to front her very own Channel 4 show; The Steph Show from spring 2020.

Today, the pregnant star shared a lengthy statement to thank the team and her fans for their support over the years.

In view of her 380,000 Twitter followers, she began: “Eeee well what a couple of days! Thank you so much for all the kind messages.

“Its been a bit overwhelming and given I’m due to give birth any day now, I thought I better take a day or two before I tweet.”

Steph – who is expecting her first child with her girlfriend – went on to thank members of her team for their support.

The mum-to-be said her “wonderful team” had been like “an extended family” to her during her time on the show.

Praising the tech gang, the production staff and make-up artists, she added: “I love them.

“They have looked after me through thick and thin, and made me sound and look better than I really am.”

Steph went on to joke that her co-presenters who include Dan Walker, Louise Minchin and John Kay, are “show-offs”.

She added: “The most supportive of group of show-offs you’ll ever meet.

“Whatever is happening in each of our lives, we’ve covered for each other, fought for each other and of course regularly taken the mick out of each other too.”(sic)

Steph then thanked the viewers for their “encouraging letters” which helped her “when the world wasn’t sure if a ‘common northern lass’ should be allowed on the telly doing serious stuff’.”

She also thanked her fans for their gifts for her unborn child, who is due imminently.

“Thank you, you got me through the ups and downs too. Always making me feel welcome in your homes.

“And I haven’t [got] tired of, ‘I often wake up with you’ being one of the most common things said to be in the street.

Steph concluded her post highlighting the various topics she had covered on the show from being bitten by a pig to being on a factory floor.

She added: “Time to hang up my breakfast hard hat and hi-vis. And say, thank YOU.”(sic)

The presenter shared the lengthy statement with the caption: “Mush alert, but just a few words I wanted to say to the @BBCBreakfast gang on my departure from the show.”

Following the news of her departure, many of Steph’s fans and co-stars flocked to social media to send her good luck messages.

Regular host Dan Walker wished Steph McGovern all the best on Twitter, writing:  “She will be a big loss but she’ll also be fantastic at her new gig and we wish her all the best.

“Well done @stephbreakfast (I imagine you’ll have to change that now). Consistently brilliant.”
