Steph McGovern admits she ‘wasn't sure’ about ‘old Etonian’ Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Tonight the second instalment of Easy Ways to Live Well will air, however Steph McGovern was initially concerned about working alongside co-host Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. The former BBC Breakfast said she had a “certain image” of an “old Etonian”.

However, the 37-year-old went on to reveal how the “hippy”, 55, won her round on their initial meeting.

In a new interview with The Times, new mum Steph spoke frankly about her latest project, just weeks before launching her own self-titled Channel 4 show.

She commented: “To be honest I wasn’t sure if I could do this series with Hugh because I thought, ‘What will we talk about?’

“And then I heard we’d be filming segments in his orchard and I was thinking, ‘A lot of people don’t even have a back garden!’”

Middlesborough-born Steph continued: “You hear the words Old Etonian and certain images come to mind.”

But it didn’t take long for her thoughts to change on the father-of-four, from Hampstead, London.

“At our first meeting Hugh brought me a homemade flapjack, and he is so warm and knowledgeable I just thought he was great,” she recalled.

“He may be an Old Etonian, but he’s basically a bit of a hippy.”

The second of the three-episode run will see the pair challenge staff at a garden centre in the Wirral to test remedies for their aches and pains.

Steph’s apprehension at exercising while pregnant is also discussed, and Hugh’s worry that he’s starting to lose mental sharpness.

The premise sees them road-test health fixes as well as explaining candidly their own hangups.

Meanwhile, it comes just days after Steph McGovern was photographed with her baby daughter for the first time.

She was seen at the BBC Breakfast studios in Manchester last week, two months after the birth of her first child.

The presenter headed to her old workplace with the tiny tot in tow, before making an emotional farewell appearance on BBC Breakfast.

During her turn on the sofa, the new mum said goodbye to her colleagues and spoke about her new and exciting TV venture.

Easy Ways to Live Well continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
