Stella McCartney's Spring/Summer 2022 collection has launched and we want every. single. piece

The spring and summer months always bring forth a sense of femininity in the fashion world, with heads turning to floaty silhouettes and lighter fabrics as we begin to shed our heavy layers.

The Stella McCartney Spring/Summer 2022 collection has taken this ethereal theme to new heights, with mushrooms serving as a key inspiration. Yep, you heard it here first: Stella McCartney wants us all on mushrooms… when it comes to our wardrobes, at least.

Using fungi as the main muse in both print and material (more on that later), Stella’s SS22 collection also takes its cues from nature’s vibrancy by blending energetic, bright colours with earthiness. We’re talking nearly-neon hues, textural fabrics like mesh, fringing and pleats amongst bold cut-out details.

Creating a clever contrast by pairing slim-fit separates with structural pieces inspired by Japanese martial art uniforms, Stella has once again created a visual narrative that is hard not to be utterly obsessed with. There’s quite literally something for everyone in this line-up.

Worthy of particular note is the Mylo Frayme bag which will be available later this season. A material innovation by Bolt Threads crafted from mycelium (mushroom leather), Mylo is the industry’s incredible new sustainable solution to PVC – an unsustainable plastic which is no longer a viable leather alternative.

A verified animal-free leather alternative, Mylo is also infinitely renewable as it comes from the underground root system of fungi. Sustainability at its smartest, according to Stella herself, who’s SS22 show marked the first ever runway show for a bag made from Mylo.

“Mylo mycelium leather is a landmark moment not only for us, but the world,” Stella noted. “What you see on the runway today is the conscious fashion industry of tomorrow.”

The Mylo Frayme is a continuation on Stella’s cruelty-free legacy and leadership, having introduced the first vegan luxury ‘it bag’ with the iconic Falabella tote in 2009 which has sold over 1 million since then and, in turn, has prevented the deaths of approximately 400,000 cows.

Elsewhere in the collection you can expect to see a redefinition of sexiness through a softer lens which focuses on lightness and tonnes of movement.

Look to the pieces featuring soft, deconstructed corsets, hand-drawn mushroom patterns, parachute-like accents, piped necklines inspired by astronaut cooling tubes for a truly stylish summer wardrobe.
