Steam games news: Half Life 3 still a pipe dream, but Gordon Freeman looks set to return

Half Life 3 might never happen, but Valve could surprise fans by releasing a brand new game in the series on Steam this year.

It’s been twelve years since Valve released the last game in the Half Life series, Half Life 2 episode 2.

But since then the critically acclaimed, flagship Valve series has simply disappeared.

The planned Half Life 2 episode 3 never materialised with fans left wondering what on Earth happened to the critical darling of the PC gaming scene.

But as Shenmue 3 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake have shown, long-awaited games can make surprising appearances just when fans least expect it.

And now it’s rumoured that Half Life hero Gordon Freeman – the ex-Black Mesa scientist turned badass monster killer – could be making a return.

As reported on in a post by SegmentNext, a leak has indicated Valve has a new Half Life game in the works for the Valve Index VR headset.

It’s believed that the unannounced new Half Life game will act as a prequel to Half Life 2.

However, instead of stepping into the shoes of Gordon Freeman it’s believed gamers will be playing as Alyx Vance in the upcoming VR game.

But it would be very surprising if Half Life’s main character doesn’t make an appearance, in some shape or form, in the game.

Elsewhere a post by Metro’s GameCentral revealed that the rumoured new Half Life game could get released this year.

It’s also been claimed that the Half Life VR game will have a playtime of between 12 to 16 hours.

As always with rumours, it’s best to take them with a pinch of salt until official confirmation.

But if Valve does have a Half Life VR game in the works then it could be just the killer app the Valve Index needs.
