CAR costs, it seems, always heat up the moment the temperature starts to fall.

And last winter, it was reported that half of motorists had not performed any maintenance checks on their car — at a time when your motor is most likely to have trouble.

But don’t scrimp on safety when it comes to winter driving. My savvy tips will keep you secure for less.

SCREEN SAVER: Screenwash prevents the water in the washer pot freezing. Petrol-station screenwash can be pricey. Shell’s once cost me £5.28 for a litre. Instead, check screenwash levels before setting off and if it needs topping up, hit a supermarket. Auto Drive Screenwash is £2.50 for five litres at Asda.

SAVE: £4.78 per litre

STEAM FREE: Cooler weather can lead to fogged-up windows but according to the AA, shaving cream has many of the same ingredients found in defoggers. Try switching K2 Car Fox Anti Fog, £5.65 from Amazon, for Sainsbury’s Basics shaving foam, 50p. Smear on screen or windows and wipe off before setting off.

TYRED AND TESTED: Icy roads mean it is more important than ever to check your tyres. Many garages charge £20 for a winter safety check but you can get a free one at Kwik-Fit and Halfords.

ICE IDEA: Pouring hot water on a frozen windscreen is never a good idea as the glass could crack — leaving you a hefty bill to replace the screen. De-icer is £2.50 at Halfords but you can make your own. Mix three parts vinegar to one part cold water and spray on the night before to stop ice forming. Sainsbury’s vinegar is 55p.

DON’T WORRY, BE ‘APPY: Festive visits to relatives and friends can clock up extra miles. Get more miles for your money by checking costs at petrolprices.com. One local had unleaded at £1.21 a litre but PetrolPrices showed it at £1.19 at a local Asda.
