Start putting cash away with top money-saving tips from our favourite bloggers

THE season of new resolutions is as good a time as any to start saving more. Fifteen per cent of us fail to stash away ANY money, reports personal finance and shopping deals site finder.com.

But the Money Advice Service, which offers free financial guidance, recommends having enough put by to cover three months of expenses. Here are some tips, from my favourite bloggers, to get you going . . .

APPY DAYS: Mrs Mummy-penny, a.k.a. Lynn James, tells me: “Set up an auto-save app tool such as Chip or Plum. It connects to your bank account and regularly auto-saves money without you even noticing that this is happening. Try not to check the balance too often and you will find a nice surprise balance has built up after six to 12 months. I am using this method to save up for Christmas 2020.”

STAY ON BUDGET: Blogger Francesca, also known as The Money Fox, says: “Create a budget. You need to know how much you have coming in and out — and be realistic. Look at previous figures and go off that. You will then know how much you have left over to save.”

DO THE MATHS: Savings expert Emma Drew says: “My tip is to divide your goal by 100 and save that amount at a time. For example, £1,000 divided by 100 is £10 — so aim to save a tenner at a time. It will seem manageable.”

STAY POSTED: “Lots of leaflets that are posted through your door will have discounts, offers and vouchers on them,” advises Fiona Hawkes’ blog Savvy In Somerset. “My recent junk-mail finds include money off at nearby supermarkets, discounted eye tests and 2-for-1 vouchers for local restaurants.”

DO THE ROUNDS: Katy- kicker’s Katy Stevens says: “Round up your bank account to the nearest £1 or £10, depending on how much disposable money you have. This can be a great way to quickly build an emergency fund or save for a rainy day,”
