Star Wars timeline: Where does Rise of Skywalker fit in movies? How to watch in order

Upcoming movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hopefully give Star Wars fans a perfect end to the recent trilogy. Of course, everyone remembers how that was not quite the case for the prequel trilogy. With more films and TV shows expected, where does The Rise of Skywalker fit in?

Where does Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker fit in the timeline?

The prequel trilogy naturally sits at the beginning of the timeline, along with The Clone Wars animated series.

These are all in the age of the Republic but that was all to change when the Dark Side ruled and the Rebellion formed to beat them.

Just as the Dark Side is starting its takeover do we have Solo: A Star Wars Story, showing the beginnings of Han Solo, and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which will star Ewan McGregor and show Obi-Wan after he lost Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side.

Star Wars Rebels then jumps in just before the upcoming Cassian Andor series, which is as yet untitled.

A New Hope, the first film of the original series, comes in yet, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the second original movie, The Empire Strikes Back.

Return of the Jedi comes next in the series before the upcoming series, The Mandalorian and animated series Star Wars Resistance.

Now we are in the age of the Resistance, where those still aligned with the New Republic are fighting keep power and defeat the First Order, those who were part of the Imperial Army on the Dark Side who wanted to be a dictatorship over the galaxy.

In this age we see The Force Awakens appear next in the timeline, followed by The Last Jedi.

In the gap before The Rise of Skywalker, we have Galaxy’s Edge, a theme park in Disneyworld.

While this may seem strange, it technically drops in as it is set in the time between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, though there is no additional narrative to be found.

But the final film in the timeline, at present, is The Rise of Skywalker.

Are there any more Star Wars movies to come?

Kevin Feige, the man behind Marvel’s major productions, has been drafted in to make a Star Wars movie, though where this will be in the timeline is hard to tell.

As well as this, Rian Johnson, director and writer of The Last Jedi, has been brought in to write a whole new trilogy to add to the Star Wars universe.

Where these movies will fit is also unknown, and how they will fit around Game of Thrones creators’ trilogy is also unknown.

That’s right – there is not just one, but two trilogies expected to enter the Star Wars universe.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the writers, directors and producers of the hit series Game of Thrones, are also writing and producing a whole Star Wars trilogy, which is also being kept tightly under wraps.

One thing fans can be sure of is that there is plenty of Star Wars movies to come.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in cinemas on December 20
