Star Wars Rise of Skywalker: 'It's NEVER good enough' – Screenwriter on truth of rewrites

Around the time Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow was fired from the project by Lucasfilm. The Jurassic World filmmaker’s Duel of the Fates movie was canned and The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams was brought back on board to complete the sequel trilogy he started. Now that The Rise of Skywalker has released and Trevorrow has revealed what he planned for the story, it’s pretty clear that his would have been more of a direct sequel to The Last Jedi had he remained in charge.

After all, The Rise of Skywalker arguably managed to conclude the story Abrams started to tell in The Force Awakens, while essentially retconning Rian Johnson’s more radical creative decisions in The Last Jedi.

Nevertheless, with Abrams roped in to direct Episode IX it’s not surprising that the story was ever-evolving.

In fact, co-screenwriter Chris Terrio has now revealed just how extensive the rewrites on The Rise of Skywalker were.

Speaking with Business Insider, he admitted: “I’ve never rewritten a film as much as this one.”

Meanwhile, Han Solo star Harrison Ford recently revealed how the crew on the original Star Wars movie thought A New Hope was “ridiculous”.

Speaking with Buzzfeed, the 77-year-old spoke of: “The complete and utter disdain that our very experienced British crew felt for what we were doing.

“They couldn’t figure it out.

“A guy running around in a dog suit, a princess, some guys in tight pants.”

Ford added: “They couldn’t figure out what we were doing, so they laughed at us constantly.

“Thought we were ridiculous… and we were.

“But we made a movie that people really enjoyed seeing.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out on digital download on April 13 and on Blu-ray and DVD on April 20, 2020.
