Star Wars: Lucasfilm hasn't decided what comes after the Skywalker saga

The final chapter in a series that’s been around for more than 40 years is fast approaching, and with it will come an end to the tale of the Skywalkers, a saga nine movies in the making.

But obviously, that’s not the end for the Star Wars franchise, not by any stretch, with a whole raft of projects on the slate. Things are ticking along particularly fast in the world of the small screen, with The Mandalorian already out on Disney+ in the States (grumble grumble).

But despite several projects being announced, the future of Star Wars in movies is a lot less clear. Now, talking to Rolling Stone, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has said that they’re still undecided about exactly which direction the franchise will take, moving forward.

“We’ve got various things we’re looking at and various ways in which we can begin or not,” she said. “As you can imagine. You know, do you go back? Do you go forward? All those questions are being asked. Do we stay in this galaxy? Do we go to another? The universe is never-ending. [Laughs.] The good news and the bad news. They have endless possibilities. It’s liberating, it’s exciting, and it creates a lot of pressure and anxiety as well.”

One of the most exciting developments in Star Wars movie news is that Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige is planning to shepherd one of the entries into the canon. But it sounds like that’s not going to be moving forward for a while yet.

Talking about how he came on board, Kennedy said, “Kevin has been a huge fan of Star Wars, and he’s made that pretty clear. And I think when he went off to do a couple of the Spider-Man movies, he realised that he could kind of step in and out of what he’s doing specifically with just Marvel. He talked to us, and he talked to the studio and said, ‘You know, Is there any chance I could step in and do one of the Star Wars movies?’ And I thought it was a pretty cool idea. So we’re just beginning to talk about what that might be and when that might be. But it’s a ways off.”

We’ll learn how the Skywalker saga concludes when Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas on 19 December. Then what happens next is anyone’s guess. For all the projects on the table after Rise Of Skywalker, here’s our handy feature.
