It turns out EA have cancelled another Star Wars game, but it is apparently now working on a sequel to the successful Fallen Order.

Publisher EA already drew ire when it cancelled a highly-anticipated single-player Star Wars adventure. Now it turns out that it has canned yet another one.

According to a new report from Kotaku, this title, codenamed Viking, would have been a spin-off of the Battlefront series and was intended to come out in autumn 2020 to coincide with the release of the next generation of consoles.

Anonymous EA employees revealed that the game would have contained open world elements and that London-based studio Criterion, which created the Starfighter Assault mode for Battlefront 2, had been brought in to work on the game, alongside EA Vancouver.

However, problems began to arise due to the challenge of cross-country development, with one person stating that there were ‘too many cooks.’ Criterion in particular had what was described as an ambitious vision for the game, wanting a strong focus on story and characters.

When EA executives realised Viking wouldn’t be finished in time, they ultimately decided to cancel the project. This in turn may have been the catalyst for Criterion taking over work on the Need For Speed franchise.

Fortunately, Criterion is still hard at work on a new Need For Speed title, and while there hasn’t been an official announcement, the successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was also confirmed to be getting a sequel.

Aside from that, EA does have one other Star Wars title in development at EA Motive in Montreal, Canada, that has been described as smaller and more unusual.

Could it have something to do with the rumours regarding the next era of the Star Wars franchise? These rumours claim that it will be set 400 years before the events of the Skywalker saga, during a time referred to as the High Republic era.
