Star Wars 9 TRAILER is here: The Rise of Skywalker reveals Leia, Lando and PALPATINE?

The film is out at the end of the year and will be the culmination of the entire Skywalker saga.

Taking to the stage in Chicago, director JJ Abrams finally spilled the first details of what fans can expect.

And, as per earlier speculation, a teaser has finally landed, complete with that all-important title.

Contrary to belief earlier in the week that the title would include the word “Hope”, or that it would be simply Skywalkers, it is instead The Rise of Skywalker.

So now let the speculation begin: who is the rising Skywalker? Will Rey’s parentage reveal be Retconned after all?

Or is it a more literal nod to Luke Skywalker ascending to the afterlife following his demise in Episode 8?

Whatever the case, we’ve got another eight months of theorising to go before the movie finally hits cinemas.

The teaser also gives a first look at Billy Dee Williams’ return as Lando Calrissian, plus Carrie Fisher as Leia.

Intriguingly, it also had a nod to Emperor Palpatine, as he laughed over a blackout screen. Could se see him return?

“The idea of having a CG character was off the table, we’d never want to try,” JJ Abrams said of Fisher.

“So the idea of ‘what if we could work scenes around her’? And emotionally, every day it hits me that she’s not here but it’s so surreal because we’re working with her still.

“She’s in scenes, and so alive in the scenes. The craziest part is how not crazy it is.

“In some scenes with Billie [Lourd], her daughter… Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is kind of mind-blowing to me.”

And speaking about the destruction of the lightsabre in Last Jedi, Daisy Ridley said: “My answer is not the end of the story and there are many months to come – but the lightsaber that Rey inherited from Luke lives.”

Naomi Ackie also confirmed her character name is Jannah – but refrained from giving a concrete answer on whether she is Lando Calrissian’s daughter.

Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) did not attend.

Star Wars 9 is out on December 19.
