The buzz for CBS All Access’ next Star Trek spinoff has been steadily building since the first Star Trek: Picard trailer dropped at San Diego Comic-Con. In another sign that the hype is real for Sir Patrick Stewart’s reprisal of his role as Jean-Luc Picard, CBS has reportedly greenlit Star Trek: Picard season 2 more than a month before season 1 is set to release.
According to Deadline, which first broke the report, season 2 will consist of 10 episodes. Season 1, which releases on January 23rd, will also comprise 10 episodes. The series will lose its season 1 showrunner, Michael Chabon, who will step down to work on a different TV series for CBS’ sister network Showtime: an adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Chabon will stay on as an executive producer for Picard season 2.
The series follows Stewart’s Picard two decades after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. We know that Star Trek: Picard will deal with the destruction of the Romulan Empire and have some very lovely scenes on Picard’s vineyard. Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Evan Evagora co-star.
Picard marks the second CBS All Access Star Trek show after Star Trek: Discovery took flight in 2018 and was recently renewed for a third season. CBS All Access’ Star Trek universe continues to expand with a short-form series, Star Trek Short Treks, and two forthcoming animated series.
