Stan Collymore selects his Premier League team of the season so far

Stan Collymore has picked his Premier League team of the season so far – and it’s dominated by Liverpool and Leicester City players.

In fact, there isn’t a single player from defending treble-winners Manchester City in Collymore’s selection after their title defence faltered with five defeats already this season.

Liverpool have been rampant in their hunt for a first top-flight crown in 30 years, having won all but one of their Premier League fixtures – with a draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford the only fly in the ointment.

Nearest challengers Leicester have also been impressive, with manager Brendan Rodgers having guided them to 13 wins from their 20 games so far.

And with the season having passed the halfway point, Mirror Football columnist Collymore has picked nine players from the top two sides in his team of the season so far.

Leicester’s impressive goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel gets the nod in goal with the Foxes having kept seven clean sheets so far this season – the joint highest along with Manchester City, Sheffield United and Burnley .

Of course, the Reds’ ultra-consistent colossus Virgil van Dijk is at the heart of the defence, alongside highly-rated Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu.

They are joined by marauding full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson – such a crucial part of Liverpool’s thrilling attacking play.

It is no surprise that the back five is made up entirely of Liverpool and Leicester players, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having conceded a miserly 14 goals this season, while the Foxes have the second meanest defence on 19.

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Turkish defender Soyuncu, and how their fans would love a defence like that at the moment, with the departure of Vincent Kompany and injury to Aymeric Laporte hitting their ailing title defence hard this term.

Collymore’s midfield is also made up of players from the top two, with Liverpool’s Champions League-winning captain Jordan Henderson selected after cementing his credentials as a genuine successor to Steven Gerrard this season.

He is joined by Liverpool team-mate Gini Wijnaldum and Leicester attacking midfield star James Maddison, whose form this season has seen him repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United.

Up front, Collymore has gone for Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, who is currently four clear in the race for the Golden Boot with 17 Premier League goals so far.

Vardy is joined in attack by the only two players in the team not to come from Anfield or the King Power Stadium, with Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Wolves assist king Raul Jimenez completing Collymore’s XI.
