Stacey Dooley claims she's not victim of Strictly Curse despite Kevin romance

Stacey Dooley reckons she’s not a victim of the infamous Strictly Curse despite her romance with professional partner Kevin Clifton.

The documentary maker, 33, says she resisted falling for Kevin, 37, while they were paired together on Strictly Come Dancing because she thought it would be “cheesy”.

She says they didn’t get romantic until after the show finished, and that therefore she didn’t fall victim to the curse.

Many couples have fallen for each other while dancing together on the BBC One show, with some even leaving their existing partners to be with their new love interest.

Stacey split from her boyfriend Sam Tucknott three months after the series had ended, and she and Kevin had lifted the glitterball trophy together.

And it wasn’t until after that they she struck up a romance with Kevin.

Stacey and Kevin were paired together in 2018

Speaking on BBC Radio 5’s Headliners podcast, she said: “I didn’t want to be such a cliche – it’s so cringe and cheesy. I want to be cooler than this. Kev and I were pals for such a long time.

“I liked hanging out with him. So it was much later down the line for us.”

Stacey’s ex Sam broke down in tears during an interview with the Mail On Sunday after finding out that she was now dating Kevin.

Sam dubbed the professional dancer a “slippery snake”.

He said at the time: “I am so respectful of her.

“But I am gutted and I am disappointed and I feel so let down that she did not have the respect for me to tell me and just come clean.

But she says she didn’t fall for him while she was on the show

“I am never going to believe her or trust her but ultimately I respect her. I love her.”

Kevin announced earlier this month that he was quitting the show.

He joined the BBC show’s professional line-up in 2013.

Announcing the news on social media, he wrote: “To the entire Strictly family,

“The past 7 years have been some of the most wonderful years of my life. I am grateful to the BBC and Strictly Come Dancing for giving me the opportunity to have been a part of something truly special.

“Since first being called ‘Kevin From Grimsby’ by Sir Bruce Forsyth in 2013 I have experienced the highs of 5 finals, winning a Guinness World record on It Takes Two, the Strictly Arena tour glitterball and then the ultimate of winning the 2018 series with Stacey Dooley.

They lifted the trophy together

“After finishing last series with the Children In Need trophy and the Christmas Special I want to leave on a high and have therefore decided the time has come to move on and focus on other areas of my life and career.

“I want to thank all of the pros for inspiring me every day as well as all of my celebrity partners. The whole team behind the scenes have made always made the Strictly family what it is and the loveliest show to work for.

“Thank you to anyone who has ever voted for me and my partners. It means the world.

“And a special thank you to Jason Gilkison for always believing in me.

“To me Strictly always has been and always will be the best show on tv and has been an absolute dream and honour to be a part of.

“Pre 2013 I used to watch every week. Now I look forward to returning to being a fan and cheering on my friends who keep dancing.”
