Stacey Dooley: Alex Jones speaks out as Strictly star is revealed as her replacement

Stacey Dooley, 32, will be stepping into Alex Jones’ shoes as the 42-year-old sets off on her maternity leave from her presenting role on BBC’s The One Show. The Strictly Come Dancing winner shared the exciting news with her 729,000 Instagram followers on Friday and quickly received an important stamp of approval from Alex herself. Stacey shared a photo of herself being interviewed by the pregnant star and co-host Matt Baker, 41, from her recent appearance as a guest on the programme. The documentary filmmaker addressed Alex as she captioned the post: “Will try my best to hold the fort for you girl @alexjonesthomson.”

The One Show favourite then took the opportunity to share her support for Stacey in the comments section.

She wrote: “You’ll smash it!!!” with a kissing face emoji.

A host of Stacey’s celebrity pals also joined Alex in wishing her well in her new role.

Doctor Ranj Singh, 39, who appeared alongside Stacey in Strictly last year, enthusiastically replied: “GET IT GURL!!”

Katie Piper, 35, another of the presenter’s fellow contestants from the BBC dance show, added a celebratory praise emoji.

Broadcaster Laura Jackson, 31, cheered Stacey on as she wrote: “Whoop x”

Stacey will be filling in for Alex for one week, beginning June 29, after the Welsh presenter embarked on her maternity leave last Friday.

The star is set to be joined by several famous faces who will be taking on Alex’s role as host on The One Show while she prepares to give birth to her second baby.

Emma Willis, 43, Mel Geidroyc, 50, and Angela Scanlon, 35, have also been announced to be taking on Alex’s spot at different points during her time away.

Speaking about her maternity leave and the new addition to her family, Alex said: “I know The One Show will be in very capable hands while I’m on maternity leave and good luck to all the guest presenters – I hope they have as much fun as I do on the show.

“I’ll be back on the sofa in the autumn, but in the meantime, I plan on watching from my own sofa with little Teddy and the newest addition!”

Stacey’s The One Show announcement comes after she posted a photo with her former dance partner Kevin Clifton, 36, on Instagram.

The pair beamed as they held each other in a cosy embrace, with the professional dancer’s arm draped around the journalist’s shoulder.

Stacey and Kevin’s relationship hit the headlines earlier this month when the presenter split with her boyfriend of five years, Sam Tucknott, who claimed that the duo are now “dating,” according to the Mail on Sunday.

Stacey has since addressed reports surrounding her alleged romance with the Grimsby-born dancer, telling her 289,000 Twitter followers: “Anyone with any adult life experience knows there are two sides to every story.”

“I haven’t got the time or energy to correct some of the utter nonsense I’ve read on here,” she continued.

“Re Sam, I loved him very much and only wish him happiness and success going forward.”

The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm.
