‘Squid Game: Unleashed’ Is A New Video Game Based On The Hit Netflix Show — But I’m Confused By The Trailer – Forbes

Netflix just released a trailer for its upcoming mobile game based on the hit Korean dystopian TV series Squid Game, and it’s . . . very strange.

Here, let’s watch the trailer and then I’ll explain my thinking below.

The game comes to Netflix around the same time as Season 2 (December 26th) but doesn’t have an exact release date yet. It will be free for Netflix subscribers on iOS and Android, and since it’s Netflix there won’t be any annoying microtransactions or time-gates or any of that nonsense that makes mobile gaming so frustrating.

But I’m really trying to figure out who this game’s target audience is, because it looks like a game for kids but the subject matter is incredibly dark. Squid Game is not a kid’s show, obviously, but then why does this game look like it’s been made for elementary school kids? The deaths look goofy, with all kinds of grim ways to die, but basically no blood.

It feels like a stretch. Like they’re milking this cash cow for all its worth with the ridiculous reality TV series based on Squid Game, a second season that I’m not really sure we needed and now this mobile game. I also think it’s a shame that netflix is limiting their games to mobile, as I’d really prefer to play them on PC. The new Dragon Prince: Xadia game is fun but I just don’t enjoy playing on my phone.

What do you think? Let me know on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
