Tottenham Hotspur could reignite their interest in Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon this summer following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Fulham’s fate was sealed on Tuesday as a 4-1 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road condemned them to a swift return to the Championship just a season after they achieved promotion to the Premier League with a play-off final win over Aston Villa.

Despite dropping into the second-tier, Fulham are keen to hang onto the majority of their squad barring the six loan players they currently possess, however, the Evening Standard reports that they expect to lose their prized asset Sessegnon.

The 18-year-old has just over a year remaining on his current contract at Craven Cottage and although he hasn’t enjoyed the best debut season in the Premier League, it is unlikely he will be short of offers when the transfer window re-opens.

Spurs were rumoured to be mulling over a bid for him last summer before being put off by Fulham’s £50m valuation, however, he is expected to command a lower fee this time around given his contractual situation.

Mauricio Pochettino called on the Spurs board to ‘operate in a different way’ ahead of their first game at the new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday and the Argentine is expected to be given funds to strengthen his squad.

Sessegnon is likely to come back on Spurs’ transfer radar given his availability, age and status as a ‘homegrown’ player while there remain question marks over Danny Rose’s long-term future despite his recent good form.

Sessegnon, meanwhile, took to Twitter to apologise to Fulham’s supporters for the team’s performances this season, saying: ‘Last year we achieved something that I had been dreaming of as a Fulham player. There was no better feeling for me than getting the club I have been at since I was a kid back to the Prem.

‘We knew this season would be a massive test but are gutted that it has ended like this. We know all season we were not good enough and ultimately we paid the price for it.

‘We can’t thank the fans enough for the support week in, week out. It has meant everything you have kept us going through some very tough times. All we can do now is try and finish the season on a high.’
