Here is how to spruce up your motor without emptying your wallet.

Screen saver. Dirty wiper blades will leave streaks on your windscreen. To get them clean, mix 60ml of household ammonia with a litre of water. Gently lift the blade and wipe it with a soft cloth soaked in the solution. Dry the blades before lowering them back. Simple. Get 500ml of ammonia at bearwoodbuilders.co.uk for £1.95, not £3.49 from Robert Dyas. It will last you ages.

No-dough windows. For windows, mix 60ml of vinegar with 400ml of distilled water and half a teaspoon of dish soap, then pour into a large spray bottle. When you get marks, spritz this solution on to the glass, then wipe clean with a microfibre cloth. Far cheaper than screenwash, £3.50 at Halfords.

SAVING: £3.50

More for the floor. Car floor mats and rugs are prone to stains. Instead of buying car carpet shampoo, such as Meguiar’s £10 cleaner, mix 200ml of white vinegar, two tablespoons of fabric softener, two tablespoons of baking soda, half a tablespoon of dish soap and a dozen drops of essential oil with 200ml of hot water. Mix in a spray bottle, spray on the carpets and leave for a few minutes. Then wipe down.

SAVING: Up to £10

Don’t sap your savings. To get corrosive bird poo off your paintwork, stir 200ml of dish soap and two tablespoons of baking soda (this neutralises the acidity of the dish soap) into a bucket of water. Pour over the stain to soak for a few minutes. Then rub with an old rag or sponge. Cheaper than buying specialised removers, which are £8.95 at ultimatefinish.co.uk.
