Springwatch 2019: ‘Needs refreshing’ Former presenter reveals real reason they QUIT show

Kate, 50, alongside Bill Oddie, 77, are two of the most iconic faces of Springwatch, having presented the show alongside each other since its inception in 2005.

After ten years commitment as host of the BBC series, Kate stepped down from her role as presenter, but has remained within the wildlife television remit, hosting shows such as Animal Park.

With Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch still a hit with viewers, a new batch of presenters are now educating fans of the show about what wildlife lurks in their gardens and beyond.

Chris Packham, 57, and Michaela Strachan, 53, now taking over the reins from Bill and Kate, the later has explained why she decided it was time for a new set of faces to front the show.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Kate explained: “I absolutely loved doing the watches and I did Springwatch before Springwatch was Springwatch.

“I did Springwatch for 10 years and there’s a thing about any career which is do something every day that scares you and the thing about Springwatch, there was two reasons I decided to stop working on Springwatch.

“The first was, it didn’t scare me anymore. I loved it, I loved working with Chris Packham who is just a genius, but I need to push myself.

“I’m just one of those people that professionally and not in my working life, I like to challenge myself, I like to scare myself, I like to be not too comfortable,” the former presenter revealed.

However, Kate had another reason for hanging up her duties to the show, as she opined: “The thing about any television programme is they all need refreshing.

“They all need constantly tweaking or otherwise, they get stuck in their ways. I knew by leaving, I was actually helping the watches have another lease of life.”

The wildlife presenting veteran continued: “It meant something had to change, a new face, a new approach and that’s a really good thing because I want them to be going when I’m dead and buried I’d like the watches to still be going and that means we do have to change.”

Talking about the importance of the show, Kate said: “They are a way of helping everybody, irrespective of where they live in the UK, irrespective of what age they are, what sort of experience they’ve had of the natural world.

“It is a way of opening up the natural world to absolutely everybody.”

Most recently, former star of the wildlife series Martin Hughes-Games, 61, who presented the show for 12 years, decided to call time of his hosting duties last year.

Kate’s exit from Springwatch hasn’t stopped her efforts to protect wildlife and the environment as the presenter’s latest project has seen her team up with Dettol, with the household cleaning brand launching a new initiative.

Dettol has created a new spray bottle which will be 100% recyclable, as well as launching refill capsules for their products to give consumers the chance to reuse their spay bottles instead of throwing them away.

Speaking about why she wanted to get involved with the initiative, Kate said: “As a nationwide community where we are generating so much waste and so much of it is not recyclable and so much of it is damaging to our environment, to our wildlife and to ourselves.

“Something has got to give, and it’s got to give quickly and as a species, we humans are a little bit slow off the mark and we need a bit of help, we need a bit of encouragement.

“We all get kind of stuck in our ways, we have our habits and we have now got to a point where we really, really do collectively need to start changing our behaviour to ensure that the next generation and the generation after that have a clean, healthy planet to live on.

“I think we’re all involved, we’re all culpable, we all need to do our bit whether we are individual or whether it’s a big corporation or a big company.”

Kate Humble has recently helped launch the Dettol Trigger Project, inspiring people to make small changes to reduce household waste and trigger a cleaner world.
