Sporting have rubbished rumours that Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer and recent reports suggested that United had agreed a £62million (€70m) deal with Sporting for the 24-year-old midfielder.

The Portugal midfielder appeared upset following Sporting’s pre-season defeat to Valencia at the weekend which naturally fueled speculation of an imminent move to Old Trafford.

However, a Sporting spokesperson has informed Portuguese outlet RTP that the rumours indicating that United had agreed a deal for Fernandes – or that they had even made an offer – were ‘completely false’.

Many publications claimed that Sporting would make an official announcement over Fernandes’ move to United after their participation in the Portuguese Super Cup on Sunday.

However, the Sporting spokesperson also categorically denied these reports, claiming the Red Devils were no closer to landing Fernandes as they had not yet received a proposal from the Premier League club.

Sporting manager Marcel Keizer admitted he was unsure about Fernandes’ future following his side’s defeat to Valencia.

‘We’ll see if we can keep our players and then we’ll see what we do,’ Keizer said.

‘I hope he [Fernandes] stays, of course, like everyone else at Sporting, but we don’t know.’

Earlier this month, Fernandes admitted that he was keen to secure a move to the Premier League ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

‘The president decides that, not me,’ the Portuguese international said.

‘I don’t care about the market, I’ve talked about this many times. The only thing I can do now is that I need to catch the plane so I don’t miss it.

‘I told you I’d like to play in England, but that’s not what interests me. It may be when the club decides.’
