Sport shorts: England duo Houghton and Bright could miss World Cup quarter-final


1. Lionesses duo face late fitness tests 

England head coach Phil Neville has revealed that captain Steph Houghton and fellow defender Millie Bright are major doubts for the Fifa Women’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway tomorrow night. 

Houghton suffered an injury following a bad tackle during the win over Cameroon while Bright has a virus. Neville said: “We will give them right into the last minute to be fit.”

2. Nadal: third seeding at Wimbledon ‘not right’

World No.2 Rafael Nadal has been seeded third for this year’s Wimbledon behind Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Nadal, a two-time winner of the grand slam on grass, says his third seeding “does not feel right”. The BBC reports that Wimbledon seeding is “different from the other grand slams in that it does not always follow world rankings and is affected by grass-court performances”.

3. LTA to build 96 new indoor tennis centres

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has announced plans to build 96 new indoor centres across the United Kingdom. Costing £250m the new centres will be built within the next ten years. 

4. Hamilton has lack of recognition in UK

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff does not believe that Lewis Hamilton gets the recognition he deserves in the United Kingdom despite winning five Formula 1 world titles. “In general in the United Kingdom, Lewis is not recognised how he should be recognised,” said Wolff. “For whatever reason there is this idea of hitting out, which maybe it provides the better headline, maybe it sells more newspapers, or gives more clicks.”

5. England thrashed by Aussies 

England captain Eoin Morgan has a crisis on his hands right now, one that could well see the host nation fail to reach the semi-final of their own Cricket World Cup. A limp defeat to Sri Lanka last Friday was followed yesterday by a humiliating 64-run annihilation at the hands of Australia at Lord’s.

6. Real to launch Las Galácticas

Spanish football giants Real Madrid will have a women’s team for the first time after taking over Deportivo Tacon. The 2019-20 campaign will see Deportivo Tacon train and play their matches at Real Madrid City. Then in 2020-21 the team will change its name to Real Madrid. 

7. United agree £50m deal with Palace

Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka looks set to sign for Manchester United after a £50m deal was agreed between the two clubs. The BBC reports that the 21-year-old could earn £80,000 a week at Old Trafford.

8. Spurs close in on Ndombele

Tottenham Hotspur are set to smash their transfer record to sign Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. The Sun says that Ndombele will cost Spurs £60m but Sky Sports News reports that the fee will be £65m. The 22-year-old is expected to undergo a medical in the next few days before signing a five-year deal.

9. Baseball rivals set for London games

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will go head-to-head in London this week. The Major League Baseball teams, who have one of the biggest rivalries in US sport, will play two regular-season matches at the London Stadium on 29 and 30 June.

10. Frank set for Chelsea return

After being given permission to talk to Chelsea Frank Lampard will become the new manager at Stamford Bridge. Ex-Chelsea player Lampard, who is currently boss of Derby County, has reportedly signed a £5.5m-a-season three-year deal to replace Maurizio Sarri and his move will be confirmed in the next 48 hours.
