Sport shorts: Bury FC face judgement day as 11.59pm EFL deadline looms

1. Judgement day for Bury FC

League One crisis club Bury could face expulsion from the English Football League (EFL) tonight unless they prove they can pay off debts and have the funds to complete the season.

The EFL has issued a final warning to Bury saying they must meet the 11.59pm deadline or withdraw from the division.

An EFL statement said: “If a solution is not found ahead of the deadline, the club must transfer its share back to the league.

“If it doesn’t, the EFL Board can authorise the necessary share transfer on behalf of Bury FC which shall be legally binding on all parties. Ultimately, either course of action will mean the club is no longer a member of the EFL.”

The Shakers are yet to play this season after having six fixtures suspended.

2. Williams to face Sharapova in New York

The draw has been made for the first round of the US Open tennis grand slam starting on Monday in New York. In the women’s singles Serena Williams plays Maria Sharapova while defending champion Naomi Osaka plays Anna Blinkova. In the men’s singles Novak Djokovic starts his title defence against Roberto Carballes.

3. Wind tunnel test for F1 2021 car

Formula 1 has revealed the first look of its 2021 car model undergoing testing in a wind tunnel. Pat Symonds, F1’s chief technical officer, said: “The wind tunnel testing we are doing is slightly different to what the teams might do. The teams concentrate solely on the forces on the car, through a variety of attitudes as they move the car around. While we naturally have an interest in what those forces are and particularly how those forces change as the car moves, we’re even more interested in what is happening to the turbulent air behind the car.”

4. Coleman investigated over missed tests

BBC Sport reports that US sprinting star Christian Coleman is under investigation over concerns he may have missed three drugs tests. If he is found guilty he would face an automatic one-year ban – ruling him out of this year’s World Championships and next year’s Olympic Games.

5. ‘Marvel Arch’ skittles Aussies

England fast bowler Jofra Archer took 6-45 as Australia were skittled out for 179 on the first day of the third Ashes Test at Headingley. The Daily Express reports that “Archer’s bullseye” puts England back on target while the quick bowler was a “six god” according to the Daily Mirror.

6. Rory in contention at East Lake

Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas are tied for the lead on 10-under after round one of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The final event of the PGA Tour season will see the winner crowned as the FedExCup champion. Rory McIlroy has also played his way into contention after a round of 4-under.

7. Farrell starts for England and Ireland eye top spot

England head coach Eddie Jones has named his starting XV for the Rugby World Cup warm-up against Ireland at Twickenham tomorrow. Captain Owen Farrell and Manu Tuilagi are named at inside centre and outside centre respectively while Ben Youngs starts at scrum half. Jonny May will play on the left wing with Joe Cokanasiga switching to the right. It will be the first time in a year that Farrell starts alongside George Ford. If Ireland win at Twickenham they will go top of the World Rugby rankings.

8. Mallinder leaves RFU for Scotland

Jim Mallinder is leaving the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) to become Scottish Rugby’s new performance director. The 53-year-old said: “I’m sad to be leaving the RFU as I’ve really enjoyed my time here, in particular getting to work with some fantastic people in a wide range of roles within the men’s pathway. I will miss working with them all but this was an opportunity that I couldn’t refuse.”

9. United in talks with clubs over Alexis

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed talks are being held with potential buyers interested in Alexis Sanchez. Italian sides Inter Milan and AS Roma have both been linked with the Chilean forward. Solskjaer said: “There are still talks with some clubs. As I have said he is working well. Let’s see in September what is going to happen.”

10. Pepe could make full debut at Anfield

Arsenal boss Unai Emery could hand the club’s record signing Nicolas Pepe a full debut against Liverpool tomorrow. Emery said: “I think his individual performances are progressively getting better. For Saturday, he is maybe ready to have more minutes. I am going to decide [on Friday], but really his progress has been positive and has been good for the team and for him.”
