Spider-Man is going to be swinging through London in AR this weekend – how to catch him in action

Peter Parker is preparing to take another swing at being Spider-Man as the next film in the series, Spider-Man: Far From Home, is released in cinemas next week.

Ahead of the film’s release, there’s another way to catch Spider-Man in all his glory. Sony is partnering with photo app Snapchat on a new spidey-related augmented reality (AR) experience.

Using the app’s Landmarker technology, which enables AR experiences at major landmarks in real-time, Spider-Man is going to be appearing at Buckingham Palace in London, as well as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Flatiron Building in New York, a prominent feature in the Spider-Man canon. This AR experience is the first sponsored Landmarker lens to run concurrently in multiple global locations.

To see Spider-Man in action, go to the palace and open up the Snapchat app. A Spider-Man icon will appear in the Lens carousel. When you select the icon and point your phone at the Queen’s home, Spider-Man and Mysterio will swing into view.

You can even take a selfie with the two characters, all thanks to AR.

If you don’t live in London, there will be a special Spider-Man selfie lens on the platform, starting from tomorrow (June 28). As well, look out for a special “newsflash” on the app, detailing Spider-Man’s antics across the world.

Speaking about the AR experience, Elias Plishner, EVP of digital marketing at Sony Pictures, said: “In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker travels the globe, so it only made sense to enable augmented reality effects for Spidey fans around the world.  Sony Pictures could not be happier to partner with Snapchat and their new Landmarker lens technology to transform iconic landmarks in various cities into a first of its kind Spider-Man experience.”

Real life AR experiences are all the rage now. Just last week, gaming company Niantic released Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, its new AR-enabled Harry Potter game. The game superimposes creatures and objects from the famous series over the real world through a smartphone camera, allowing fans to experience the Wizarding World like never before.
