‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Director Jon Watts to Helm ‘Methuselah’ With Michael B. Jordan

Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts has come aboard Warner Bros.’ Methuselah, which Michael B. Jordan attached himself to as producer and star a month ago. Together, Watts and rising-producer Jordan have an eye to turn this tale into a franchise for the studio, according to Deadline.

If you opened this thinking “Methuse-whatzit?”, that might sound like a tall task. But the project has reportedly been a priority for Warner Bros. for quite some time, with Tom Cruise‘s name in the mix for the title role at one point. The movie would focus on the Biblical figure who managed to stay alive for more than 400 years; Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins took on the role for Darren Aronofsky‘s 2014 epic Noah. This WB project would re-tool the character with a kind of Highlander-like bent, honing in on the idea that Methuselah has acquired a whole host of ass-kickin’ and mystery-solvin’ skills across his many adventures through time.

Watts brought Peter Parker back into the Marvel fold in 2017 with Spider-Man: Homecoming starring Tom Holland as Spidey. The globe-trotting sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, is due in theaters after Avengers: Endgame on July 5.

For his part, Jordan has been as busy lately behind the camera with his Outlier Society banner—which signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. in January—as he has been in front of it. The actor served as executive-producer on Rooster Teeth’s anime series gen: LOCK and is currently developing a Detroit-set monster movie with Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. On-screen, Jordan recently signed on to star in A Journal for Jordan directed by Denzel Washington, as well as a reunion with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler for Wrong Answer, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

The report notes that Watts and Jordan will soon start a search for a new writer on Methuselah. The latest draft of the film was by Beirut writer Tony Gilroy.
