Spice Girls rock Edinburgh as 50,000 Scots fans treated to spectacular show

The Spice Girls last night gave their legion of Scottish fans what they really, really wanted at a packed Murrayfield.

Emma, Geri, Mel B and Mel C hit the Edinburgh stage with style when their reunion tour came north of the Border for its only gig.

They opened their concert in front of 50,000 revellers by belting out Spice Up Your Life.

Previous shows had been hit with sound problems but there was no sign of technical difficulties hampering the Fab Four as they treated the crowd to other favourites, including 2 Become 1, before ending on Wannabe – the song that kicked off Girl Power.

There had been fears a downpour could put a dampener on the atmosphere and a brolly ban imposed by organisers DF Concerts risked the show being an even bigger washout.

It didn’t look good when chart-topper Jess Glynne entertained the crowd in the rain as the warm-up act.

But the skies above the capital cleared and the sun came out in time for their favourites to arrive.

ScotRail put on extra trains to cope with the army of Spice Girl diehards heading to Edinburgh and a number of roads were closed to cope with the extra traffic in the area.

Superfans Frances McKenna, Miranda Pointon and Bridget Thompson, all 32, travelled from New Zealand for the gig.

Frances said: “We’re here just for the Spice Girls.

“We’ve been friends for 24 years and met when we were just eight. We love the Spice Girls.”

Teacher Kelda Ross, 37, who travelled from Newcastle with friends for the show, said: “There was a date in Sunderland but
we would rather come here. It’s been amazing.”

Jai Callahan, 28, from Glasgow, who also made the trip with pals, said: “We’re all the biggest Spice Girls fans. This is a great night.”

Fans paid between £55 and £295 for tickets to the shows.

The Spice Girls are expected to earn about £10million each from their 12-date UK tour, which includes three gigs at Wembley Stadium in London this week.

The group will perform in Bristol tomorrow night.
