Spencer Matthews EXCLUSIVE: Star talks wife Vogue and fatherhood

Spencer Matthews has revealed marrying his wife Vogue Williams was inevitable as they had so much in common.

The 31-year-old star admits he had no doubts about tying the knot with the Irish presenter, 34, and starting a family with because she made him want to give up his ‘selfish’ lifestyle.

The former Made In Chelsea favourite, who has teamed up with Argos for a festive storytelling event, chatted to MailOnline about their family life with son Theodore, 18 months, his best friend Hugo Taylor becoming a dad and how he turned his back on drinking to create a low-alcohol brand.

Formerly known for his Lothario lifestyle and famous exes, things changed dramatically for Spencer when he met Vogue while competing on reality show The Jump in 2017.

Now parents to little Theodore and recently celebrating their love with a second wedding party, Spencer can’t believe how much his life has changed – for the better.

Discussing becoming a family man, Spencer said: ‘I was always pretty selfish. Vogue and I weren’t looking for a serious relationship at the time we met and I think that’s probably part of the reason why we became so close as friends first. It made sense.

‘I recognised a lot of Vogue in me and vice versa. We fit, we were very compatible together – even my mum thinks we’re similar! She’s my best mate. When Vogue came around, that was me done.

‘I honestly don’t think anyone should put a timeline on it – getting it wrong is way wrong than settling it at a later date. Even some of my male friends are panicking about settling down.

‘[When you meet The One] all of a sudden, you want to put other people first. Of course you think about yourself and your work, but ultimately Vogue and Theodore are what matters.’

Poor Spencer reveals he’s always told that he’s a lucky man – even by complete strangers – and has finally accepted his fate.

‘I would argue that Vogue is lucky as well’, he joked. ‘I was getting off a flight, half asleep, and the lady just went, “You are so lucky. Your wife, she’s amazing.”

‘I’ve understood now that I’m supposed to socially accept that I’m the lucky one. I suppose I’d rather be punching rather than not! It’s a good thing, right?’

The pair tied the knot in the presence of family at Spencer’s stunning 10,000-acre family estate, Glen Affric, in Cannich, Scotland.

But this summer, they enjoyed a second wedding reception in London in front of their close friends and wider family, which Spencer says meant a lot to his wife.

Spencer said: ‘The real wedding was far more special for me, it was the day we actually got married and it will always hold a very special place in my heart.

‘This wedding was for our friends – Vogue is far more popular than me and had hundreds of friends who felt hard done by, it was just an excuse to have a party really.

‘For Vogue it was a different deal. She got to wear everything, dance, have fun and drink, whereas the first time around she was very heavily pregnant.’

In attendance at the second celebration was one of his oldest friends Hugo Taylor and his wife Millie Mackintosh, who recently confirmed they are expecting their second child.

They have come a long way from the trio’s drama-fuelled Made In Chelsea debut and Spencer says he couldn’t be happier for the couple – and is thrilled Theodore will be getting a little playmate.

He enthused: ‘It’s the next step for them, it’s lovely news. Theodore can have a young pal in Hugo’s daughter. I think it will be wonderful for them, they will be fantastic parents.’

Keen to move on from his reality show debut, Spencer and Vogue have starred in their own successful reality show on E4, which has seen the pair gain a new legion of fans thanks to their sarcastic banter.

He explained: ‘I started TV when I was 20, I’m 31 now, plenty of years on the box, bad luck viewers! For me it was an opportunity to really be myself and not be pushed into storylines or involved in other people’s business even if you don’t want to be.

‘It was an opportunity for me and my wife to create a bit of comedy, not fuelled by drama and have a play with a different genre of television. For me it’s a completely different job.’

Elsewhere, Spencer has been hard at work launching his low-alcohol business, the Clean Liquor Company, which has caused a real buzz in the industry and is set to be rolled out into hundreds of Sainsburies stores this January.

The TV personality gave up drinking shortly after becoming a father after deciding his habits were becoming addictive, and is now fully focused on staying healthy and hangover-free.

Quizzed whether he misses drinking, he said: ‘Not at all, I’ve been sober about 18 months now. Alcohol, drinking full strength liquor at least, is a think of the past for me.

‘We’re nearly the most followed low alcohol company on Instagram in the world and it’s going to be a huge global brand.

‘People who want to drink less or not at all have options, it’s incredibly exciting that people share my views.’

Spencer has teamed up with Argos to help spread some festive cheer this Christmas, revealing he is actively trying to encourage story time among families.

Discussing his festive plans with Theodore, Spencer enthused: ‘It’ll be our second Christmas with him. He’s a real little boy now, he’s so full of emotion and character, it’ll be a completely different experience this year.

‘Christmas is all about festivity, family, being together, reading stories and entertaining one another. We’ll make our own traditions now. Being a new father it’s so special to be involved in projects like this.’

Spencer will be in store at Argos’s Tottenham Court Road in London on Sunday 8 December between 9.00am – 11.30am.

Any customers that miss the events can watch Spencer reading the stories on argos.co.uk from Monday 9 December.
