Spain holidays: Majorca set to close Magaluf party strip due to 'disgraceful' Britons

Spain holidays have long attracted Britons looking for sun, sea, sand and parties. And now the notorious ‘Brits abroad’ have returned to the streets of Majorca’s party town Magaluf. In fact, their behaviour has been so shocking, government officials in the Balearic Islands have considered closing the famous strip and busy nightlife street Platja de Palma in the capital Palma.

The region has been looking to end the bad behaviour of tourists for some time.

Strict rules have been introduced to help control this.

Massive fines can now be handed out if the rules are breached.

These include no alcohol offers such as two for ones or happy hours, touting for customers, drinking in the street, any drunken behaviour, pub crawls and party boats.

DON’T MISS

However, despite these and the current coronavirus regulations in place – tourists seem to be behaving exactly the same as before in Magaluf and Platja de Palma.

According to island newspaper Ultimahora.es, the Balearic government has asked its legal experts to investigate how the main street in Malagaluf, known as Punta Ballena, where the majority of bars are, and the main street in Platja de Palma, can be closed down.

This could also apply to any premises “where agglomerations have occurred that do not comply with all anti-COVID-19 protocols.”

Minister of Tourism, Iago Negueruela, and the Minister of Public Administration, Isabel Castro, announced yesterday, that “all options and possibilities are being evaluated, among which is the closure and the application of economic sanctions up to €600,000.”

The Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca says it wants “this uncontrolled excess dynamics in tourist areas be nipped in the bud.”

Its vice president, María José Aguiló, said: “We condemn emphatically the incidences.

“There does not have to be any tolerance since it puts at risk the season and the security image of the island.”
