Spain and Portugal flight strikes latest: Update on travel chaos as fuel strikes hit


What is the current situation in Spain?

Air Nostrum pilots for the Spanish regional airline have called off a strike in Spain, bringing relief to some British travellers.

Yet industrial action planned by Madrid Airport security personnel and ground handling staff, as well as train staff, remains.

Website Gov.uk updated its travel advice today for Britons travelling to the holiday destination, and stated: “There are several strikes planned throughout April affecting air travel across Spain.

“Airport security workers at Madrid Barajas Airport began striking on 12 April; it’s unclear when this strike will end.

“Airport workers throughout Spain will be on strike on 21 and 24 April. If you’re travelling during these times, you should prepare for the possibility of delays, allow additional time, and keep up to date with your airline on the status of your flight.

“RENFE Spanish railway company workers have announced a strike for 17 April and possibly 24 April.

“Cancellation of trains include some long distance high speed trains (AVE). You should contact RENFE for information.”

What have easyJet and Ryanair road about disruption over the weekend?

An easyJet spokesperson said about flight disruption in Spain: “Although this is outside of our control we would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience and would like to assure them that we are doing all possible to minimise any disruption as a result of the industrial action.”

It later suggested on Twitter passenger to Portugal should check the website’s flight tracker for up to date information.

Express.co.uk has contacted Ryanair for comment.

Yet in a reply to a passenger concerned about their route, they replied: “Hi, flights are scheduled to operate, if your flight is affected you will receive an email and a text message with all the details, please follow this link to see up to date information on flights.”

How many Britons are expected to travel this Easter?

ABTA The Travel Association estimates 2.1 million British holidaymakers are set to head overseas over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

They forecast Good Friday the busiest day for travel, with Spain the UK’s favourite foreign holiday destination for the weekend.

Malaga, Alicante and the Canary Islands are the most popular regions and temperatures this weekend are set to reach 21C in Malaga, 23C in Alicante and 23C in Gran Canaria.

Mark Tanzer ABTA Chief Executive said: “As always on a busy bank holiday leave plenty of time to get to your departure port and check for engineering work and line closures if using public transport.”
