Sony to stop selling PS4 game download codes in shops

This is the only sort of download card Sony will allow from now on

From April the only place you’ll be able to buy digital PS4 games is the PlayStation Store, as Sony abandons the practice of selling codes.

Mortal Kombat 11 - Baraka is back, amongst othersGames Inbox: Are you planning to get Mortal Kombat 11?

Even if you have an all-digital games collection there’s a good chance you buy some of the download codes from ordinary retail shops, either a bricks and mortar store or online at somewhere like Amazon.

That’s not something any company has ever seemed to have any problem with, and yet Sony has just announced it’s to put an abrupt end to the practice.

Plans first surfaced over the weekend, in regards to American chain GameStop, but it’s now confirmed that it’ll apply worldwide.

There’s already no PS4 equivalent

Shops will still be able to sell codes for DLC, season passes, virtual currency, and PSN credit but as of 1 April the practice will end for full-priced games – although whatever stock shops have left they’ll still be able to sell that.

Sony’s explanation for why they’re doing it is that it’s, ‘in order to continue to align key businesses globally’. Which is so vague and evasive as to be essentially meaningless.

You’d assume it’s to control prices in some way, even though the codes are almost always the full RRP – although there’s nothing to stop shops or resellers from cutting the prices if they want.

Here’s the full Sony statement, not that it helps:

‘As of April 1, 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment will no longer offer full games through SIE’s Global Digital at Retail program. This decision was made in order to continue to align key businesses globally. To support full games and premium editions, SIE will introduce increased denominations at select retailers. DLC, add-ons, virtual currency, and season passes will still be available.’
