Sony Pictures Classic has successfully landed the North American theatrical distribution rights to commercial director Edson Oda’s upcoming feature directorial debut Nine Days, a fantasy drama which follows five human souls, who will have a chance to be born in the real world. Starring Winston Duke and Zazie Beetz, the film had its world premiere last month at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where Oda won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.

“Nine Days is one of those rare movies that will have a long life and stand the test of time,” Sony Pictures Classics said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It’s about alternate realities—Black Mirror on the big screen, with touches of Wings of Desire and The Matrix. It offers surprises galore and marks the birth of a major filmmaker. We are excited to be introducing Nine Days to audiences around the world.”

The victor will be rewarded with a coveted opportunity to become a newborn in the real world, while the others will cease to exist.
